Our top candle care tips for a longer, cleaner burn
Taking proper care of your candles ensures a clean, even burn while maximizing their lifespan and fragrance. Whether you're a candle enthusiast or new to the world of handmade candles, following these candle care tips will help you get the most out of every burn.
Candle Wick Trimming: The Key to a Clean Burn
One of the most important steps in candle care is trimming the wick before each burn. Here's why:
- Always trim your wick to 1/4" before lighting to prevent excess smoke and soot buildup.
- Long wicks burn hotter and can cause your candles to burn too quickly.
- Use a wick trimmer for a precise cut, or trim with scissors, nail clippers or even a tissue to pinch off the excess wick.
How Long Should You Burn Your Candle?
Burning your candle properly extends its life and prevents tunneling. Keep these guidelines in mind:
- Let your candle burn for 3-4 hours at a time to allow an even melt pool to form.
- Some wax hang up on the sides is normal and will melt down after a few burns.
- Avoid burning for less than 3 hours, as this can cause tunneling, making it harder for the wax to melt evenly in future burns.
Candle Safety Tips
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or near children, pets or drafts.
- Keep your candle away from flammable materials and place it on a heat-resistant surface.
- Extinguish your candle safely using a wick dipper or a candle snuffer to prevent was splatter.
When to Stop Burning Your Candle
Once your candle reaches 1/4" - 1/2" of wax at the bottom, it's time to say goodbye and stop burning it. Candles aren't meant to burn until the jar is empty, as this can cause overheating.
What to do with leftover wax?
- Use a wax warmer to enjoy the remaining fragrance.
- Place the jar on a candle warmer to release the scent without an open flame.
- Clean out the candle jar so you can repurpose the jar for storage or DIY projects.
